Dental Implant Terms

Dental Implant - in restorative dentistry, a metal root-shaped device placed surgically in the jawbone to act as an anchor for a false tooth.

Osseointegration - the fusion of the surface of a dental implant to the surrounding bone, in preparation for the anchor of a false tooth.

Denture Implants - metal implants used to secure and stabilize dentures.

The earliest known examples of dental implants have been found in the Mayan civilization over 1,350 years ago. Tooth-shaped pieces of shell were found placed into the sockets of three missing lower incisors and had actually been incorporated into the bone structure.

A dentist named Maggiolo fabricated a gold dental implant in 1809 which was placed into a fresh tooth extraction socket. He then attached an artificial tooth to this gold implant after a period of initial healing. Long-term success rates with various metals were poor until the bone bonding properties of titanium were discovered in the mid twentieth century.

Per-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedith orthopedic surgeon, discovered the bone bonding properties of titanium while studing bone healing and regeneration. His idea to use the discovery in dentistry opened up the modern field of dental implants and implant dentistry.
